I´ve been asked so many times to explain the origin of my drawing technique. Should I start by saying that it is a mix of the thousands of drawings made in a human life? I used to roam every inhabited or deserted space with a drawing pad in my hand and a pencil in the other. This world I´ve been living in hasn´t just been experienced by a man. It has been deeply observed and drawn by the artist.
I would draw almost every single moment of this life, just because I have done that already in the past. My paintings are a glimpse into the life I have lived, with all the underlying layers of time and the mist of memories.
My work is an exploration of the oniric world lying in the back of my subconscious mind. There is a mix of images, feelings, and people, driven by the natural landscapes where I´ve been brought up. That´s why, oftentimes, creatures such as fish, snails, owls, and horses coexist in a two-dimensional universe.
Those dreams nurture the roots of my spiritual journey, which bind the sea, rivers, fish, sailboats, wandering monks, the woman I love, and trees. Ten years ago, I took the Zen monk vows, and the Japanese calligraphy and sumi e painting techniques merged with my fine arts and architectural background.
My drawings and paintings emerge from a deep state of contemplation, unplanned, naturally spontaneous. Just like that, each trace leads to the next one.
The drawing is the foundational stone.
Every piece seeks to capture the impermanent essence of reality, the trace of time passing, rather than the static photograph of a single instant.
My work invites and reveals a mixture of worlds, cultures, and beliefs from a human being raised on the frontier where the earth meets the ocean.
